In 2018 our alumni team held the inaugural 1stGenYale conference on campus. This was the first time that we came together as a new alumni shared interest group, celebrating who we are, being first! Alumni from diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, and from all schools and years, connected with each other, shared our stories, and developed meaningful friendships to continue well after the conference was over.
In a letter to the Yale community in September 2018, President Peter Salovey '86 PhD shared his thoughts on the conference and on 1stGenYale: "I am happy to share with you a video, 'Blazing the Trail: Being the First,' documenting the inaugural 1stGenYale Alumni Conference held last April. I had the privilege of speaking at the event, as did my wife Marta Moret ’84 M.P.H. — herself a 'first-gen' Yalie. I am excited about this initiative, which brings together alumni and students who are committed to making Yale ever more welcoming, inclusive, and excellent."
