More than 200 members of the Yale community gathered at the Westin Resort in Anaheim on March 11 for For Humanity Illuminated, where President Maurie McInnis and distinguished faculty, alumni, and students highlighted the global impact of Yale’s work. 1stGenYale was proud to be present in Southern California, engaging alumni in conversations centered on access, resilience, and the transformative power of opportunity—values deeply aligned with our mission.

Throughout the evening, themes of collective well-being, scientific innovation, social impact, and leadership took center stage. Most powerfully, Abnner Olivares ’24 shared a moving reflection on what access to Yale has meant not only for him, but for his family and community—capturing the ripple effects that first-generation opportunity creates across generations. His story echoed the heart of 1stGenYale’s work: ensuring that talent in every community is recognized, nurtured, and supported, and that proximity to opportunity becomes the norm rather than the exception.
As President McInnis spoke about resilience in the face of challenges—including the recent Los Angeles wildfires—she emphasized the strength of community and shared purpose. 1stGenYale stands firmly within that vision, committed to expanding access, building bridges, and celebrating the quieter, often unseen transformations that occur when first-generation and low-income students are empowered to thrive at Yale and beyond.
